The Melville Award is given annually by The City Gardens Club of New York City to an individual who has demonstrated excellence in science and/or environmental education. This year, the Awards Committee has selected Jeanne Salchli, an environmental science teacher for grades Kâ5 at PS 343 in Queens.
After beginning her career in nonprofits, Jeanne transitioned to elementary education, where she discovered her passion and talent for inquiry-based science teaching. For more than 21 years, she has inspired young learners through hands-on, sustainability-focused activities that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and environmental stewardship. Her curriculum integrates green infrastructure, including the monitoring and maintenance of rain gardens, into daily classroom learning.
Jeanne founded and continues to manage the Himrod-Wilson Community Garden in Bushwick, a vibrant space that serves as a green hub welcoming all community members. Under her leadership, the garden has become a center of collaboration and connection, engaging volunteers that include school staff, school families, and neighborhood residents. The garden has twice been recognized by Assembly Member Maritza Davila (District 53) for its outstanding contributions to sustainability, community engagement, and environmental education.
In addition, Jeanne serves on the NYC Public Schools Climate Education Leadership Team, which develops and leads initiatives to promote awareness and support educators in integrating climate-focused learning into their classrooms.
