2021 Melville Awardee – Barbara Kurland

Since 2004, Barbara Kurland has been the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Director of Learning and Partnerships as well as its School Programs Manager. She oversees and supports Project Green Reach which serves Brooklyn’s Title 1 schools’ teacher education, school workshops, and tours.

In partnership with BASE (three small New York City Public High Schools) and in coordination with efforts of Prospect Park, Kurland brings the resources and vision of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to support academic excellence and rigor for students at BASE schools.

Barbara Kurland and the BBG staff develop new curriculum, plan and deliver training for Garden Guides. She also teaches adults in the Continuing Education Horticultural Certificate Program as well as in the Parks Department’s Master Gardener Training Program. She advises on the content of interpretive materials for the BBG’s plant collection.
