Membership Process and Application

Membership Requirements

Candidates must be willing to support the objectives of The City Gardens Club of New York City. A prospective member should be known to at least four members of The City Gardens Club.

To be eligible for membership, a candidate must have participated in four City Gardens Club events. They may include two Lecture/Teas, assembling of Nature Kits, participating in the Garden and House tour, going on trips or attending special events organized by the Club.

Procedure for Presenting a Candidate

The Club will have membership admissions twice a year: fall and spring. A candidate is proposed in writing by one member, seconded by another, and endorsed by a third member, each of whom knows the candidate well. Proposers and seconders must have been City Gardens Club members in good standing for at least two years, while endorsers may have been a member for only one year. A member may propose a candidate for fall membership and another candidate for spring. While proposing someone, a member may not write a seconding or endorsing letter for someone else. The seconder and endorser may write supportive letters for two candidates in each admission season.

The President, the two Vice-Presidents and members of the Membership Committee may not write letters of recommendation.

Proposer Responsibilities

The proposer is expected to attend all Club functions with the candidate and to make sure the candidate meets members of the Membership Committee. Membership Committee members are easily identified at the Lecture/Teas by the flowers they wear. For fall membership, the deadline for meeting members of the Membership Committee is November 13, 2017. For spring membership, the deadline is February 26, 2018.

The proposer should be certain that the candidate is aware that after becoming a full member of the Club she is expected to assist with Nature Kits and work as a hostess at the annual Garden and House Tour. These duties are an important part of our members’ responsibilities toward our status as a tax-exempt organization. Please explain to your candidate that the earnings from the Garden & House Tour fund our important communitiy outreach programs (scholarships, grants and the Nature Kits) and that we depend on our members to support the tour in any way they can.

We expect members to attend the Annual Meeting.

The proposer should inform the candidate of the financial obligations involved in membership: the initiation fee, membership dues, and the optional cost of Lecture/Tea subscriptions. These fees are subject to change periodically.
